The Process
What a Full Tear-Off Involves
We take the old roof off down to the bare wood. That is the part some crews skip by laying new shingles over the old ones, and it is why we do not — you cannot see rotten decking through a layer of shingles, and the new roof only lasts as long as what it is nailed to.
With the deck exposed we walk it, replace any wood that has gone soft, and then build back up: underlayment, drip edge along the eaves, flashing at every wall and valley, new shingles, and ridge venting so the attic can breathe.

A replacement is the one time you get to choose. Architectural asphalt shingles are what most Valley homes end up with — they handle the heat, come in every color, and are the most straightforward to repair later if a storm takes a few off.
Metal costs more at the start and stays on the house far longer. It reflects heat rather than holding it, which shows up in an August electric bill. Impact-resistant shingles sit in between, built on a tougher mat so hail is less likely to bruise them — worth a look given what spring does around here.
